His research work focuses on phytoplankton and primary production, and his wider interests include evolution, paleoecology, photosynthesis, biogeochemical cycles and astrobiology.

Paul G. Falkowski mainly focuses on Phytoplankton, Photosynthesis, Ecology, Botany and Oceanography.

His Phytoplankton research includes themes of Biomass, Atmospheric sciences, Upwelling and Plankton.

The study incorporates disciplines such as Chlorophyll, Irradiance and Isochrysis galbana in addition to Photosynthesis.

His work deals with themes such as Pelagic zone and Chlorophyll a, which intersect with Chlorophyll. His Botany study integrates concerns from other disciplines, such as Cyanobacteria, Nitrogen fixation, Zooxanthellae and Photic zone.

His Oceanography study combines topics in areas such as High-Nutrient, low-chlorophyll, Total organic carbon, New production, Biogeochemical cycle and Carbon dioxide.

He was elected as member of the Euorpean Academy of Engineering in 2010.
